The Dawson Society Presents Wounded by Beauty IV: A New Way of Listening to Music
The Dawson Society is proud to present the fourth event in its Wounded by Beauty series—guided talks that invite audiences to encounter classical music in a deeper and more attentive way.
This special evening features a performance of Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Trio No. 3 in F minor, Op. 65, presented by Perth’s acclaimed Chimera Ensemble, alongside a lecture and live musical commentary by Emeritus Professor John Kinder FAHA OSI.
John Kinder is Emeritus Professor of Italian at the University of Western Australia and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. A distinguished scholar and lecturer, he is widely admired for his ability to illuminate works of art—literary and musical alike—by drawing out their philosophical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. His Wounded by Beauty lectures are known for their depth, clarity, and capacity to transform the listening experience.
Through Professor Kinder’s perceptive insights and commentary—illustrated with excerpts performed live—the audience is led into the inner world of the music, discovering its structure, emotional depth, and expressive power. The lecture is followed by a complete performance of the work, allowing listeners to hear the music anew, enriched by understanding.
The Chimera Ensemble piano trio brings together three of Perth’s most respected musicians: Rebecca Glorie (violin), Melinda Forsythe (cello), and Tommaso Pollio (piano). Known for their expressive intensity, refined musicianship, and compelling ensemble unity, the trio brings freshness and depth to a wide range of chamber music, from familiar masterpieces to lesser-known works. Each musician is an established performer and educator in their own right, and together they form one of Western Australia’s leading chamber ensembles.
Together, lecture and performance reveal music as one of the most sincere and moving expressions of human experience—our shared longing for beauty, happiness, and a mysterious “Other” that promises fulfilment of the heart.
